Description
For your consideration is the iconic and absolutely stunning vintage Electrohome Circa 701 C stereo console. Manufactured as part of Electrhome's Circa 75 line of ultra-modern stereos in the 1960s, the model 701 is regarded as the most desirable of the line. The stereo retailed for 0 in the mid 60s, which is over ,000 today. Because of its expensive price point, sales were modest, and nice, working examples are increasingly difficult to find.Designed by Gordon Duern, the 701 was introduced in 1967 and was prominently featured in the Electrohome exhibit at Expo 67 in Montreal. The stereo reflects a height of Canadian mid-century furniture and decorative arts design, and has been featured in countless retrospectives and exhibitions of Canadian mid-century design.
A masterpiece for sight and sound, the 701 delivers sleek, futuristic design that reflects the swinging 60s and is avant-garde even 50 years later. Stereo components are set in a rich walnut cabinet that is finished on all four sides -- this stereo is meant to be
the
design focal point of a room. The cabinet features a tambour, or roll-top, door that reveals stereo controls that mimic a spaceship or airplane dashboard. The cabinet sits on a cantilevered brushed steel base with a walnut stretcher -- it almost floats in air.
Speakers are inset in the unit on either side of the tambour door.
The stereo features an AM/FM Stereo radio and a Dual Turntable that is capable of playing 12", 10" or 7" records at 16, 33, 45 or 78 rpm's. Additional features include bass, treble, volume & balance controls, in/out jacks to hook up an external tape deck, and satellite speaker ports.
Connect your phone, iPod, or other portable music device through the tape inputs using a phono adapter chord (easily available, not included with purchase).
The build quality of the stereo is outstanding -- it is extremely heavy (over 125 pounds). The stereo
tuner can be enjoyed immediately, although the turntable and electronics will benefit from a tune-up.
Dimensions: 62" long. 24" deep. 26" high.
Cosmetic Condition
The cabinet is in excellent vintage condition. The original finish presents extremely well, with some finish loss on the left front speaker (see pics), very minor flaking on some edges (also see pics), and minor scuffs here and there.
The stainless steel base is in excellent structural condition, and could use a cleaning. The walnut stretcher has two drilled holes in each of the right and left sides, which do not appear to have a function. They are difficult to see and do not detract from the structural integrity of the stretcher.
All knobs and buttons are present and original to the unit. The cord is original and in good condition. The original labels (model information and schematic) on the underside of the stereo are present and in excellent condition. The cardboard dust covers that affixed to the underside of the cabinet are not present.
Operating condition
The stereo tuner picks up both FM and AM stations. Both speakers work. Balance, bass, and treble functions all work. The Dual turntable was not tested and the toner arm needs a needle.
The stereo is 50+ years old, so the electronics certainly need to be tuned up.
I am happy to provide additional pictures or descriptions and answer any questions if needed.
This stereo is an iconic example of Canadian mid century design, and would look stunning (a showpiece, really) in any decor, but especially in a modern setting.
